While we will always try save a damaged tooth with restorative dentistry, sometimes an extraction is necessary. In severe cases of tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems, multiple tooth extractions may be the ideal solution.

When Are Multiple Extractions Necessary?

There is wide-variety of reasons for multiple tooth extractions. While it may seem counter intuitive, multiple extractions can improve your oral health. An extraction allows use to eliminate complications associated with a problematic tooth, paving the way for future replacements like dental implants.

The most common reasons for multiple tooth extractions include:
•  Irreparable tooth decay
•  Irreparable damage due to injury or facial trauma
•  Bone loss around the tooth due to gum disease
•  A fracture or infection deep within the tooth or tooth root
•  Impaction issues due to a lack of space in the ridge for additional teeth

Impaction is a regular issue associated with wisdom teeth or third molars. The wisdom teeth erupt at a much later age then the rest of your permanent teeth. Often times, there is not enough space in your mouth to accommodate a new set of teeth. Multiple extractions of the wisdom teeth can prevent potential problems like impaction and crowding issues.

The Extraction Procedure

Despite common misconception, the extraction procedure is virtually painless thanks to the local anesthetic. Local anesthetic numbs the area and eliminates discomfort. We also offer several sedation techniques to ensure a stress-free experience, especially if you have significant fears related to dental procedures.

Once the area is then prepared we can perform the extractions. There are two types of extraction procedures, simple and surgical. A simple takes place on a tooth that has already erupted above the gum tissue. A surgical extraction takes place on a tooth that is partially or fully below the gumline.

During a simple extraction, we typically use a tool known as an elevator to loosen the tooth from its socket. Then we use a pair of forceps to remove the tooth from the mouth.

During a surgical extraction, we make an incision in the gum tissue to expose the underlying tooth. In many cases, the tooth is then broken up into several pieces, which makes removal easier. In some instances, we also need to remove a small portion of the supportive bone.

For both procedures, we may recommend an immediate bone graft. A bone graft, also known as socket preservation, will prevent deterioration of the jaw. This is particularly important if you are going to receive a dental implant.

After the Removal of Multiple Teeth

Once your extractions are complete, Giri Palani, DDS, FICOI will give you a set of post-operative instructions. We may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection and ensure a smooth healing process. A minor amount of inflammation, bleeding, and soreness is common after oral surgery. If any of these symptoms persist or get worse, be sure to contact us as soon as possible. Follow the post-operative instructions closely to avoid potential complications after your extractions.
