Why get dental implants?
Dental implants restore the function of your natural teeth, giving you the look and feel you desire. Implant surgery replaces your missing tooth root, giving a stable foundation for replacement teeth. This procedure benefits you by preserving the remaining bone providing the stimulation previously provided by the natural tooth roots. Dental Implants are the preferred method of tooth replacement.
Dental implants save you from more dental problems than traditional bridgework, because they do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. Bridges require us to grind down the adjacent teeth, secure a partial denture to adjacent teeth with clasps, which can cause the loosening of the surrounding teeth. Implants also spare patients the disadvantages of traditional false teeth or dentures.

What is a Dental Implant?Dental implants can permanently replace missing teeth. Without altering any additional teeth the new tooth makes dental implants far better than alternatives like bridges.
Dental Implant ProcessThe implant process is performed over a few months.
Insert the BaseThe base is prepared by removing the decayed tooth and repairing any bone damage, then the actual implant needs to be installed. An incision in the gum is made and a portion of bone is removed, then the implant screw is installed. More than one implant can be placed at once. After the implant(s) are installed the gums are sutured.
Healing TimeIt takes anywhere from 3 to 6 months for your mouth to heal. During the healing time the jaw bone will actually form around the implant in a process called osseointegration. You can have a temporary crown installed on the base during the healing process. This will allow you to eat, speak and smile normally.
Attach the CrownOnce the area has healed, it is time to place an abutment on the implant. This abutment will be the base for the permanent tooth (crown). An impression is taken of the abutment which is used to make the crown. The lab creates the crown that is affixed to the abutment. The implant will look and feel like one of your own teeth and your smile will look like you always wanted it to.

After Your Dental Implant Surgery |
After dental implant surgery, it is recommended that you take at easy for 48-72 hours. Resting assists the healing process and limits after surgery bleeding. Drink plenty of fluids, but nothing too cold. You may need to apply an ice pack to your face in twenty-minute intervals for the 2 days following surgery. If you received upper implants, do not blow your nose for two weeks. It is common to experience slight bleeding for about two days after surgery. You will feel slightly uncomfortable the first two days following surgery, but the third day is generally better. An increase in temperature of about 1 to 2 degrees is to be expected and is not a cause for concern. Finally, while you can eat when you are hungry, do not chew directly onto the bone graft. |
