Professional Teeth Cleaning
It's important to your dental health to have professional cleanings performed by a certified dentist or hygienist. Dr. Giri Palani, DDS, FICOI and his staff use specialized tools and training to:
•
Remove plaque build-up from the surfaces of teeth. Bacteria in the mouth form plaque, which collects on teeth and causes decay, gum disease, and gingivitis.
•
Remove tartar from teeth surfaces. Tartar, or calculus, is plaque that has hardened on the teeth and its removal requires special procedures. Tartar below the gum line is an indicator of gum disease.
•
Remove surface stains from teeth through polishing.

Comprehensive Exams
Dental exams are essential for preventive health care. Your exam at Total Smile Care, will begin with our experienced hygienist followed by your dentist, Dr. Giri Palani, DDS, FICOI. Together they will clean your teeth and identify bone loss or inflammation in your gums. The dentist will evaluate tooth decay and any other possible dental problems, including looking for abnormalities in your mouth, face and neck.
During your exam, your dentist will ask about your oral hygiene habits and diet. We may demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques. You might be asked personal questions including tobacco use, if you are taking medications, and prior dental work. This time is also for you to ask questions about your dental health.
What Can You Expect at Your Dental Exam?
Your hygienist and dentist will complete a through exam during your appointment to determine your overall oral health:
•
Evaluate risk for decay, inflammation of the bone or gums, and root decay root canal
•
Evaluate need for dental work including tooth restoration or tooth replacement
•
Look for signs of teeth grinding or trench mouth and other dental issues
•
Check your neck, jaw and bite for any problems
•
Remove calcium deposits or stains from your teeth
•
Discuss techniques for proper cleaning of your teeth or dentures
•
Assess fluoride levels from dental hygiene products, diet, and water sources
Dr. Giri Palani, DDS, FICOI will need to know any medical problems you have, or medications you are taking, as these issues could impact your oral health. Some medications cause dry mouth which increases your tooth decay risk.
The Importance of Preventative Dental Care
When Does Preventive Care Start?
Preventive dentistry should begin right away, with your first tooth. Daily care should begin with the first tooth with the first visit to the dentist by 12 months. Early visits to a dentist build a foundation for good oral health.
What Information Can Preventative Checkups Tell Me About My Health?
Checkups can provide information about your overall health. At Total Smile Care, we are often the first to notice symptoms of certain medical conditions or problems. We are concerned about more than just the state of your teeth. We look at how your oral health fits into your total well-being, and may see symptoms of a variety of conditions:
•
Heart disease and stroke. Gum disease can increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. By treating gum disease and inflammation, you might be able to lower your risk.
•
Diabetes. Patients who have type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes increase their chance of developing gum disease, and their ability to fight off bacterial infections is decreased.
•
Stress. Bruxism, or the grinding of the teeth, can be caused by stress. Done subconsciously while you sleep, you might not be aware that you are grinding, however, your dentist can spot the symptoms.
•
Low-weight or premature births. Research suggests that pregnant women who experience serious gum disease are more likely to deliver a baby prematurely or have a baby with a low birth weight.
Oral Cancer Examination
Included with your dental exam, your dentist will look for signs of oral cancer. We will feel under your jaw, neck, and the insides of your cheeks and lips. The roof and floor of your mouth and your tongue will also be examined for signs of a larger problem.
Dental Sealants
Sealants
Sealants protect your teeth from decay and cavities. Your back teeth, the molars, are most vulnerable to cavities and decay. We recommend having a sealant placed when the molars first come in to ensure they are protected early.
Sealants create a barrier between your tooth and plaque, food particles, and bacteria. Sealants last for about 10 years and can be reapplied.
Invisalign®
Ask us about Invisalign®, a new system for straightening teeth without the use of metal braces. They are a type of clear braces, virtually undetectable, easy to use and comfortable to wear. Treatment takes about 12-18 months.
