Dental Implants Intro

A dental implant is a metal device that Giri Palani, DDS, FICOI can surgically place to replace a single or multiple missing teeth. Missing teeth can have a negative impact on your function, your health, your aesthetics and your self-confidence. Our team at Palani Center for Dental Implants can improve your oral health increasing all of these areas. Giri Palani, DDS, FICOI can meet with you, perform a full dental examination, and review your needs. Working together, we can create a treatment plan that will best fit your needs, which may include dental implants.

A dental implant is not a replacement tooth, but a metal post that connects a false tooth to your jawbone. For most patients, we use a titanium post, because it is known for being strong, lightweight and biocompatible. Giri Palani, DDS, FICOI surgically places the implant into the jawbone where the tooth is missing. Unlike a dental bridge, partial denture, or other restorations, an implant does not rely on neighboring teeth to stay in place. A dental implant is a permanent restoration.

When researching restoration options, conventional bridges or dentures are no longer your only option. Restorations done with dental implants offer a function and look of your natural teeth. That’s because the device replaces your missing tooth root, allowing it to be stable, steady, and create a connection with your jaw when chewing. Serving as a new tooth root, the implant is surgically placed below the gums. The process can take several appointments, and months, depending on the preparatory steps that are needed. Before surgery, many patients require improving the health of their gums, and a simple bone graft procedure to bulk up their jawbone.

After the implant is placed, an amazing natural healing process occurs. As the jawbone heals, it will create connections with the implant bonding the two together. This process is known as osseointegration, and it means to take into the bone. The implant and the bone become fused together for a firm and permanent hold. This integration between the bone and implant will help your replacement tooth function and feel more natural to you.

Placing your Dental Implant

The placement of your dental implants is a simple procedure, though it is a surgical procedure, it is minimally invasive. A majority of the work is done in the planning phase, including creating a precise map with 3D x-rays to pinpoint the precise location for implantation.

On the day of surgery, with all the preparation complete and a plan in place, we will first make sure the patient is comfortable. Most patients do not require general anesthesia, in fact, most patients find local anesthetic to be appropriate. In some situations, we may recommend conscious sedation. Once the patient is comfortable, the gum tissue is then opened up to expose the bone beneath. Giri Palani, DDS, FICOI will use a specialized dental drill to create the necessary space in the bone, and the implant is placed. The area is then sutured closed. In some cases, we may want to increase the healing and use PRP, platelet-rich plasma, or PRF, platelet-rich fibrin.

The healing process will take approximately three to six months; this time is needed not only for tissue healing but bone healing. Not all patients are candidates for this procedure, proper healing is essential to the success of this process, and there are some situations that patients have lower healing. We will discuss this with you in consultation.
